WIther of you two readers know that I am attached to the International House of Prayer in KC.  Granted, I live in Alaska now, but our hearts are knitted together and in a strange way, the bond is getting stronger.

RIGHT NOW, Onething 2008 is going on.  This is a gathering of 15-20,000+ people to go deeper in the Word and fast and pray in the New Year.  The conference is being webstreamed for FREE.  Go HERE to sign up for the free broadcast.

There is a ton of free stuff on the IHOP website too.  I am being shaken, stirred, and provoked.  I pray you take the time to tune in to some of the sessions and bring in the New year like you never have before.  Your life will be eternally changed!

Most people I know have some sort of traditions when it comes to the holidays.  One of mine is the John Piper poem that I put a few posts back.  Antoher is the annual voyage to look at Christmas lights on Christmas Eve, and of course the obligatory opening of a present.  I was looking around the internet today and saw a few that I want to incorporate next yer, but I am curous…. what are YOURS?

Merry Christmas everyone!

This Christmas season I have been hearing a new song by Casting Crowns that is on their new Christmas album.  It is really good and I thought I woudl share it with you in the spirit of Christmas.

And also, Faith Hill has a new Christmas song too.  It is a different look at Mary as she goes to give birth to Jesus.  A friend of ours had a baby this week, so it is real easy to wrap my head around.  Enjoy!

Please keep praying for our family in the following areas:

Saftey – both Rachel and I on seperate occasions were nearly in accidents today

Health – we are all running hard, and we are all about 80% at best

Finances – we are believing for supernatural increase and breakthrough for our financial situation.

Merry Christmas to all!

Over the past few years my two readers have come to enjoy The Innkeeper by John Piper.  I encourage you to read it, or listen to it.  New this year is a link to the illustrated book.

The Innkeeper

Jake’s wife would have been fifty-eight
The day that Jesus passed the gate
Of Bethlehem, and slowly walked
Toward Jacob’s Inn. The people talked
With friends, and children played along
The paths, and Jesus hummed a song,
And smiled at every child he saw.

He paused with one small lass to draw
A camel in the dirt, then said,
“What’s this?” The girl bent down her head
To study what the Lord had made,
Then smiled, “A camel, sir!” and laid
Her finger on the bulging back,
“It’s got a hump.” “Indeed it does,
And who do you believe it was
Who made this camel with his hump?”
Without a thought that this would stump
The rabbi guild and be reviled,
She said, “God did.” And Jesus smiled,
“Good eyes, my child. And would that all
Jerusalem within that wall
Of yonder stone could see the signs
Of peace!” He left the lass with lines
Of simple wonder in her face,
And slowly went to find the place
Where he was born.

Folks said the inn
Had never been a place for sin,
For Jacob was a holy man.
And he and Rachel had a plan
To marry, have a child or two,
And serve the folk who traveled through,
Especially the poor who brought
Their meal and turtle-doves, and sought
A place to stay near Zion’s gate.
They’d rise up early, stay up late,
To help the pilgrims go and come,
And when the place was full, to some
Especially the poorest, they would say,
“We’re sorry there’s no room, but stay
Now if you like out back. There’s lots
Of hay and we have extra cots
That you can use. There’ll be no charge.
The stable isn’t very large
But Noah keeps it safe.” He was
A wedding gift to Jake because
The shepherds knew he loved the dog.
“There’s nothing in the decalogue,”
He used to joke, “that says a man
Can’t love a dog!”

The children ran
Ahead of Jesus as he strode
Toward Jacob’s Inn. The stony road
That led up to the inn was deep
With centuries of wear, and steep
At one point just before the door.
The Lord knocked once then twice before
He heard an old man’s voice, “‘Round back!”
It called. So Jesus took the track
That led around the inn. The old
Man leaned back in his chair and told
The dog to never mind. “Ain’t had
No one to tend the door, my lad,
For thirty years. I’m sorry for
The inconvenience to your sore
Feet. The road to Jerusalem
Is hard ain’t it? Don’t mind old Shem.
He’s harmless like his dad. Won’t bite
A Roman soldier in the night.
Sit down.” And Jacob waved the stump
Of his right arm. “We’re in a slump
Right now. Got lots of time to think
And talk. Come, sit and have a drink.
From Jacob’s well!” he laughed. “You own
The inn?” The Lord inquired. “On loan,
You’d better say. God owns the inn.”
At that the Lord knew they were kin,
And ventured on: “Do you recall
The tax when Caesar said to all
The world that each must be enrolled?”
Old Jacob winced, “Are north winds cold?
Are deserts dry? Do fishes swim
And ravens fly? I do. A grim
And awful year it was for me.
Why do you ask?” “I have a debt
To pay, and I must see how much.
Why do you say that it was such
A grim and awful year?” He raised
The stump of his right arm, “So dazed,
Young man, I didn’t know I’d lost
My arm. Do you know what it cost
For me to house the Son of God?”
The old man took his cedar rod
And swept it ‘round the place: “Empty.
For thirty years alone, you see?
Old Jacob, poor old Jacob runs
It with one arm, a dog and no sons.
But I had sons . . . once. Joseph was
My firstborn. He was small because
His mother was so sick. When he
Turned three the Lord was good to me
And Rachel, and our baby Ben
Was born, the very fortnight when
The blessed family arrived.
And Rachel’s gracious heart contrived
A way for them to stay—there in
That very stall. The man was thin
And tired. You look a lot like him.”
But Jesus said, “Why was it grim?”

“We got a reputation here
That night. Nothing at all to fear
In that we thought. It was of God.
But in one year the slaughter squad
From Herod came. And where do you
Suppose they started? Not a clue!
We didn’t have a clue what they
Had come to do. No time to pray,
No time to run, no time to get
Poor Joseph off the street and let
Him say good-bye to Ben or me
Or Rachel. Only time to see
A lifted spear smash through his spine
And chest. He stumbled to the sign
That welcomed strangers to the place,
And looked with panic at my face,
As if to ask what he had done.
Young man, you ever lost a son?”

The tears streamed down the Savior’s cheek,
He shook his head, but couldn’t speak.

“Before I found the breath to scream
I heard the words, a horrid dream:
‘Kill every child who’s two or less.
Spare not for aught, nor make excess.
Let this one be the oldest here
And if you count your own life dear,
Let none escape.’ I had no sword
No weapon in my house, but Lord,
I had my hands, and I would save
The son of my right hand . . . So brave,
O Rachel was so brave! Her hands
Were like a thousand iron bands
Around the boy. She wouldn’t let
Him go and so her own back met
With every thrust and blow. I lost
My arm, my wife, my sons—the cost
For housing the Messiah here.
Why would he simply disappear
And never come to help?”

They sat
In silence. Jacob wondered at
The stranger’s tears.

“I am the boy
That Herod wanted to destroy.
You gave my parents room to give
Me life, and then God let me live,
And took your wife. Ask me not why
The one should live, another die.
God’s ways are high, and you will know
In time. But I have come to show
You what the Lord prepared the night
You made a place for heaven’s light.
In two weeks they will crucify
My flesh. But mark this, Jacob, I
Will rise in three days from the dead,
And place my foot upon the head
Of him who has the power of death,
And I will raise with life and breath
Your wife and Ben and Joseph too
And give them, Jacob, back to you
With everything the world can store,
And you will reign for evermore.”

This morning, on my way home after working the night shift, I was listening to a radio broadcast from Living on the Edge by Chip Ingram.  He has been speaking a series that has been very good on being a Romans 12 type Christian. Please go to his website and check it out.

Today’s message was on forgiveness.  Forgiving those that have hurt us is some of the hardest stuff that Christians have to do.  But when we stop and think about it, it is our duty.

Forgive

Getting to the place to forgive is not only the first step, it is the most difficult.  We often find ourselves holding grudges and not even willing to enter the place of forgiveness, but when we open our hearts to the place of forgiveness, the real work of the Holy Spirit can begin.

Forgiving

Forgiving is a process.  After we havce made the decision to forgive, we have to continue the process of forgiving as we go through life and are reminded of the pain and suffering we have to keep praying for the offender and the offended.  The Bible syas to love our enemies as ourselves and this is speaking directly at forgiving those that persecute us.

Forgiven

There will come a point in which we realize we have forgiven.  It may take a while, but when  one day you hear of some good thing that has happened to that person that caused you pain, and you feel no bad feelings toward the person, byut instead are truly happy for them, you have achieved the goal of having forgiven just as He has forgiven us.

Again, seriously consider going to the Living on the Edge website and taking a look around.  There is a lot of good stuff to look at.

Almost 3 years ago to the day, on December 20th 2005, I began this journey of blogging. My life is a never ending story of the Grace of God. These words written at the top of this page are ones that I feel really represented not only what I am trying to express, but who I am as a person. “Reflecting over time, looking forward and believing God has something in store bigger than anyone can imagine. This is my way of scribing all the events as they come to pass so that people can know me and perhaps a bit more about themselves.”

As a celebration of sorts of hitting the 200 post mark, I decided to take a trip down memory lane and post a few links from my archives.

This first one is the story of what took us to the International House of Prayer.

I have been working a TON these past few days. I plan to write some more tonight at work, and continue again with the 26 days of quality posting. Enjoy the read!

Today, I am posting 2 videos by Casting Crowns.  The first is a teaching on the song Slow Fade.  The second is the song.  These videos go right along with the series I posted over the past week.  The struggle for people to do the right thing in teh face of adversity is a constant challenge.  Take a look and listen to these videos and give me your thoughts.

Please be praying for my family as I am working a lot over the next several days and none of us are 100% healthy.

My wife thought that after my last posts I should write about how I am practicing what I am preaching. Rachel is very good about cutting to the heart of the matter and not allowing bologna to reign supreme. While this series on being focused has been inspirational, it is not easy to adjust a lifestyle of lethargy to one of focused determination. While Rachel and I were in Kansas City, we stumbled upon a Bible reading plan that has you read through the Bible in 8 weeks. That amounts to 25 chapters a day. I have not even come close to that amount of reading, but I am reading! I read anywhere from 2 to 25 chapters a day. I read it, and while doing so, I underline those passages that jump out at me. Sometimes I will jot those passages in my journal and then pause to seek God for more revelation as to what is being spoken. This is the basic way I go about reading the Bible.

At the same time, I am trying to come up with vision/goals for what I want personally, and for my family. An old adage is that if you aim at nothing, you hit 100% of the time. I am determined to aim at some “things”. For starters, let’s take a look at the list in my notes from session 1 and the areas for setting goals, or as I like to think of them, targets. I post these here not to say “Look at me”, but more of a means to be held accountable, to be open with those that are interested enough to care, and to put it in writing for myself.

Spiritually (Stick with and increase my Bible reading, pray a minimum of 7 hrs EVERY week, fast at least 1 day/wk.)

Relationally (Acquire my 3, 12 and more friends that are like-minded and men according to Exodus 18)

Vocation (Work in a job that allows Rachel to stay home and be the mom she wants to be)

Ministry (See men awakened to their roles as spiritual heads of their families and as leaders of the body of Christ)

Economically (get out of the hell-hole of debt in supernatural time –under 2 years)

Physically (begin an exercise routine, lose 30 lbs, get in shape for a sheep hunt with my son)

Rest (Take my family to Onething 2009 in KC, Disney World and to Pops’ Georgian Hacienda)

Action plan – for each long and short-term goal in each area of your life.

Schedule – for each action plan, i.e., focuses us to prioritize. This is where our life vision most easily is derailed and lost

I am not going to write out all the action plans and schedules for these targets. However, I love the fact that this whole process is even beginning. Even if 50% of the items listed above happen in the next 2 years, which will be a major improvement to life on more levels than I can describe. So, now that I have laid out what I am going to be chasing after, what are your targets? Get focused!

Today marks the end of this series. I really hope that there are at least a couple people that are reading and DOING what these messages and notes say. I have been inspired greatly by these teaching and can only imagine what life would like today if I had heard them before or soon after arriving at the International House of Prayer in KC. May your day be all it was created to be, and may God meet you in the quiet places of your heart. Remember, God’s Word is alive and he wants to speak to you.

John 7:37-39 “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” (NIV)

This scripture is literal, for real and for you. Something dynamic happens in your heart when you determine this is your inheritance and your destiny. Why not you, why not now, why not here? There needs to be a time in your heart that you say, “I’m going for it”. Our spiritual inheritance is more than living barely saved and mostly depressed. God has more for us than being spiritually bored and burnt out. Don’t settle for anything less than a flowing heart of Living Water.

Ezekiel 36:26 Ezekiel was speaking of a tender heart that feels the presence of God on our heart. The anchor to our faith is the Word, but we can feel His presence regularly. We don’t have to settle for a life without feeling in the Sprit, the presence of God. It is the Will of God for the majority of your life to feel His presence. It will not be 100% of the time because He will require us to seek Him out. The point however is that God has so much more for us than we settle for.

Not only is the heart tender, it is receptive. As the Holy Spirit touches us through the Word, we acquire new capacities to receive divine information (revelation) in many forms such as words of knowledge, dreams and visions, prophetic revelation, the Word coming alive to you, or even just the Lord speaking to your heart. We were made to receive this as part of a flowing heart of Living Water and our destiny!

A flowing heart is empowered with Godly desires. We will find ourselves loving what we used to hate and to hate the things you used to love. The Lord will give us opportunities to awaken our spirit to Him through subtle ways. It could be while listening to a worship song and our heart is stirred to press into God more, yet more often than not we push the impulse aside. God gives us this desire so that we will feed it! We have to make a conscience decision to cooperate, to obey the Holy Spirit’s leading us into a closer relationship with Christ. Don’t be content with the moment of inspiration sprinkled throughout the year. Build the thirst into a raging thirst and God will answer it! The Lord gives us the initial spark; it is up to us to make a bonfire out of it.

Proverbs 4:23 Guard your heart with all diligence. Guard the flicker of fire that God gave you as a free gift and it will become a bonfire, a raging thirst, which the Lord will answer.

The more we experience God the more raging thirst you have for more.

Song of Solomon 5:2-8 One of the best descriptions of a lovesick heart.

God wants us to have an awakened heart. This is the phrase John the Baptist quotes in John 3:29 “…heard the voice of the bridegroom”; it is the same concept as SOS 5:2. The heart is awakened when we meditate on the Word of God and it brings us into the reality that it is the lovesick God that is speaking to us in weakness.

God wants us to have a yearning and leaping heart. Imagine having a heart that was awakened, leapt, and yearned (thirst and hunger) for more when the Word of God touched it. More times than not, the way the Lord speaks to you is through the Word.

Journaling –

Pray/read the scripture. When you write, more comes more often than not.

Fasting-

Fasting doesn’t move God, it moves you. It tenderizes your heart at a faster pace. A great line that I read once about fasting is that fasting is not something you choose, but that chooses you when you can’t find an answer to your problems. Some friends of mine recently finished reading The Fasted Lifestyle by Mike Bickle, and said it was great book. I would suggest that you pick it up if you are curious about fasting.

A lot of people don’t read the Bible because they don’t know where to start and don’t have a time set for it. Don’t let this happen to you. Get Focused! Set a plan in motion and never look back. There is no reason to let another day go by. You don’t know how many tomorrows you have, so don’t waste any more!

I am sitting at home this morning, with a mild fever, aches and pains. I was wondering if I was going to sick during this glorious 6 days off without using a bit of vacation. Sure enough, I am sick. One thing about being sick is more often than not, God has something important to say during the illness. It would seem that this time He is speaking about being focused, and finding vision. The other night, some new wonderful friends that are answers to prayer, asked us specifically how they could pray for us. They asked, how they could pray for us specifically, as in if we could have anything we want, whether financially, spiritually, relationally etc. what would it be? Those are some great questions, and one that Rachel and I are praying and talking through this week, stay tuned later in the week for what we came up.

Back to the series -Here is the link to The Power of a Focused Life Part 3

Here are the notes I took, again, the black letters are what was handed out, the other colors are what I wrote. Take your team when reading through it. This material can and will change your life if you want it to.

WHY STUDY THE BIBLE?

A lot of people have a heart for the Word and to study it, but they don’t put the effort into studying it. They want to, and say they will, but a year goes by and they look back and realize that nothing was accomplished.

Studying the Word is not a duty; it is the fuel that awakens our heart. Remove the idea of reading the Word as a discipline, but as a FREE fuel that causes the heart to flow like a river. Biblical study makes your heart alive. Yesterdays experience with God will not keep your alive today.

It doesn’t matter how cold your heart is, the Word of God has more fire and depth. Use the Word to encounter God! Just like eating has no substitute, there is no substitute for studying the Word.

John 7:37-39 “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” (NIV)

A. You have to thirst! Jesus said ANYONE. No matter whom you are or what you are into, ANYONE can do this. Jesus does not only have satisfied customers that study His Word. Our excuses are not valid! Don’t give the enemy a place to keep you handcuffed from attaining a deeper relationship with the Father!

B. You have to “come to Him”. We have superficial appetites that spoil our hunger for God. We nibble all day long at all kind of things like we are eating junk food and then we are dying of starvation because we never get to the place that we have real spiritual hunger. There is little if anything we would die for that we want it so bad. You will never have a flowing heart until thirst for God is awakened in you. Thirst is the byproduct of vision. Waken the vision in yourself that there is more in God for you to have! Thirst and hunger (used interchangeably) are important! John 5:37-40 Jesus is saying that the Word was not alive in their hearts. We need to “come to Him” when studying the Word. God wants us to talk to him while we are reading the Word.

For Scripture that is about us believing something about God, ask God to give you a revelation that the passage is true. Then, thank Him for the revelation and that it is true even though you don’t feel it. The pray over it awhile, in the Spirit if able. Write down the things that come to your heart while praying.

For scriptures that are about us being obedient tell the Lord that you are committed to seeing it as a reality in your life. Resolve in your spirit to say ‘yes’ to the passage, and ask God to help you. Make a sweet resolution to say yes. By asking God for help, it creates a dialogue, and once the two of you are talking, the communication flow becomes easier by the moment.

  • Have a sustained time to drink up the Word. Go Deep! Take some time with the Scriptures. Take the time to journal the thoughts about what you are reading. Get the water of the Word (the washing of the Word) flowing and stay there awhile. Have a sustained time! You cannot develop a flowing heart on the run, it takes time!
    • Believe in Him the way the Scripture says. “As the scripture says”, is qualifying the QUALITY of believing (the way you approach the Scriptures). Jesus is not saying to believe in Him the way our churches taught us to, but to do so the way He laid it out in the Word of God. Many people approach their belief in God according to how they brought up spiritually. People that say they have tried “it” (the whole Christianity thing) tried the “it” that they were taught or brought up in, but it is almost 100% certain it was not the Christianity “as the Scripture says”. So how does the Scripture say?
      • By a Spirit of Dedication – a yes in your spirit to obedience—Charles Finney preached a sermon in the 1800’s titled “One Sin Persisted In is Fatal to the Soul”. We cannot have areas of our life that the Lord points out to us to stop and tell Him “no” if we want our hearts to begin to flow. We have to war against every area God shows us to be at war against. One area of rebellion in our heart will cause the Holy Spirit to be stagnant in our life.
      • A Spirit of Devotion – There has to be an attitude of “I love you” in the midst of our dialogue with the Father through the Word
      • A Spirit of Servanthood—Isaiah 58:10 “extend our soul” for others. Genuinely give our lives away for others in need.
      • A Spirit of Confidence in God’s Affection in the Midst of Your Weakness—Showing ourselves as confident when we screw up that we are open to correction and willing to continue the battle versus shutting everything down through condemnation.
    • The inheritance of EVERYONE is having a heart flowing rivers of living water. It is a supernatural work.

To summarize:

As we go through life being discipled and discipling others…

Give people a vision that awakens thirst for Christ.

Teach them how to “Come to the Lord”

Show them how to sustain it.

Believe in Him as the Scripture says

By a Spirit of Dedication

A Spirit of Devotion

A Spirit of Servanthood

A Spirit of Confidence in God’s Affection in the Midst of Your Weakness

You don’t have to sellout for anything less than an anointed heart flowing of Living Water—IT IS YOUR INHERITANCE!
